EDP Labelec was established in 1994 It is a technology and innovation center of the EDP Group.

EDP Labelec focuses on excellence, providing services in four different areas:
Tests & Trials
We provide answers to the management and maintenance of assets in order to increase safety, reduce failures and incidents and optimize environmental and maintenance costs.
Tests & Trials
The Electric and Electromechanical tests and trials area has 3 laboratories accredited by IPAC (Portuguese Institute for Accreditation):
High-Voltage Laboratory (LAB-AT);
Electrical Metrology Laboratory (LAB-ME);
Energy Metering Laboratory (LAB-CE), that also has the recognition of IPQ as OVM - Metrological Verification Organism, for testing BT counters.

Performance analysis services of electrical systems:
Tests, at power-frequency, of lightning impulse test and switching impulse test (dry and wet);
Partial discharge measurement, environmental tests and ageing tests;
Tests to characterize the state of equipments/electrical systems;
Metering systems calibration in high voltage and high current;
Calibration of test and metering equipments;
Dielectric strength testing in power transformers and rotating electrical machines;
Power quality monitoring;
Measurement of electromagnetic fields and radioelectric disturbances (RIV);

THERMOGRAPHY

EDP Labelec offers terrestrial and aerial thermography services, with a focus on power plants, substations, switching and transforming stations, electrical panels, MV, HV and EHV overhead power lines, thermal insulators and facilities.

Thermography allows the acquisition of instant images of the temperatures, detected by the infrared cameras (IR), at each moment.
Tests & Trials
EDP ​​Labelec operators with adequate training and years of experience in thermography, thermographic observation and analysis of the state of operation of electrical and mechanical equipment, can obtain reliable results (measurement of severe temperatures) and interpretations of the operational state of inspected organs.

Inspections results are presented with thermograms, photographs and temperatures of selected points from organs with abnormalities; they also include extrapolations of measured values ​​for other operating conditions (e.g., for other values ​​of load) and recommendations for action, in light of the interpretation of results.

As a result of this activity and this experience is possible to reduce revenue losses that result from unexpected equipment service outages, verify initial running quality of equipment recently placed in service, plan more efficiently and economically maintenance activities and avoid serious accidents with persons and facilities, originated by faults.

MULTISENSORY INSPECTIONS OF OVERHEAD POWER LINES

The overhead power lines thermographic inspections at EDP Labelec began almost simultaneously with inspections of other electrical facilities, by land, with operations since 1980.

In 1994 was held the first experience of inspection by helicopter, which came to originate overhead power lines inspection routines, which have been growing in number and variety.

In 1996 was introduced an important improvement - inspection with a stabilized gimbal remotely controlled from inside the helicopter and with two cameras - video and IV.

In 2007 was incorporated, at the overhead power lines inspection activity, the determination of distances between conductors and obstacles, with a laser/LIDAR and a geo-referenced anomalies system and digital imaging. This system, initially developed in EDP Labelec, has allowed the identification, over the years, of thousands of critical or serious distances, which are transmitted to the client with images of 'clouds of laser spots' and lists of points with anomalies.

This information allows the companies that own overhead power lines, from the HV to EHV, to reduce the lines outage and plan more effectively the maintenance actions. As the LiDAR system can be used simultaneously with visual inspection flight and thermographic inspection, there is a significant saving of inspections costs.

In 2013, it was acquired a second gimbal which includes two further sensors - a 'reflex' photography camera, to record quality photos of visual anomalies and an ultraviolet camera (UV), which allows to view the corona effect in daylight.

The use of two systems and two helicopters has afforded the inspection of more than 20000 km of lines per year.

The aerial thermographic inspections have also allowed thermal mapping inspections and evaluation of the thermal impact of thermal power stations rejected water.

Thermographic inspections are accredited by IPAC (Certified L0220).
Tests & Trials
We are dedicated to a preventative vigilance of electrical equipment, through diagnosis obtained by the analysis of insulating oils in order to assess the equipment condition, thus enabling our customers a better way to manage their assets.

Determination of the lifetime expectancy of insulating paper, which allows our customers a more efficient decision about the investment to be made.

Regeneration of insulating oils increasing the life cycle of oil and equipment. This is a solution where the cost / benefit ratio is more attractive and with practically nonexistent environmental impacts.

Consulting within the online monitoring area, supporting the most suitable monitor selection to each case and performing the validation of the measurements made by the device

Post-mortem analysis of transformers to obtain additional information for diagnosing the fault causes, which impact the operation of transformers in service and eventually the design of new transformers.

Evaluation of the transformers’ health index, enabling the ranking of equipments in terms of their condition, for a better management of assets, allowing the prioritization of interventions to be made in the costumer's transformers.

The main activities of the department are as follows:

Preventive monitoring of oil insulated electric equipment, namely: power transformers, current transformers, voltage transformers, combined transformers, crossings, ruptures, among others;
Transformers faults diagnosis;
Evaluation of the transformers’ health index;
Characterization of insulating oils corrosive effects;
Chlorine detection test of PCB's, PCT’s and PCBT's in insulating oils;
Determination of life expectancy of insulating paper;
Insulating oils regeneration;
New oils reception trials;
Compatibility tests between nature and/or different aging states of oils;
Characterization of vegetable oil behavior;
Tests to characterize the state of lubricating oils, transmission oils efforts and dielectric solvents;

The Laboratory’s main activity is the chemical and energetic characterization of coal and ash. The Solid Fuels Laboratory is accredited by the Portuguese Accreditation Institute (IPAC) for 22 coal and ash tests in accordance with the technical accreditation annex LO683-1 that can be consulted here.

Our main activities are focused on the electrical energy sector, including electrical energy production, transport and distribution. We have acquired an extensive experience, from services provided to the EDP Group companies and REN, through supporting facilities design and operation and systems and equipments quality control. Estrutura Labelec
The fifties: the beginning
LABELEC’s roots stretch to the mid 1950’s, under another name: CNE’s Laboratorial Center. At that time, Portugal had a major percentage of its population in rural areas which subsisted through agriculture. In fact, the country was under an oppressive dictatorship regime which meant that a political concern or agenda regarding industrial development and innovation didn’t exist. It can be stated that the creation of what today is our company as well as the institution of the organized Portuguese electrical system is due to the perception and action of the engineer and professor Ferreira Dias Junior. His plans were linked to a greater project: that of seeing the Portuguese economy take a leap forward, shedding its precarious and mainly agricultural character and launching itself along the path to progress and the future, embracing industrialization and the new development ideals. It was only until 1955 when the complex, where nowadays our headquarters are located, was completed.
The beginning of laboratorial activities such as chemical investigation & researching, electric testing, among others, was a huge step towards achieving safety and quality of electrical services and meant as well the establishment of a path of evolution.
Post-war revolution: uncertain times
1974 was a critical year for the country and its people. The military coup took place on the 25th of April all over the territory, with focus on the capital, Lisbon, and put an end to the dictatorship regime that had lasted nearly fifty years, giving back democracy to the Portuguese people. Succeeding the revolution, as much of every economic sector was on sort of a hold position due to the uncertainty that the revolution brought, so were the activities of the Laboratory.
At this stage, despite being on the edge of specialized technical work and scientific knowledge, the staff at the Laboratory had most of their work focused on solving circumstantial issues that eventually came through. That describes that the enormous potential that the Laboratory had, was not being maximized at that point. Regarding the notion of technical excellence associated to the Laboratory was the fact that almost every single worker had the top-grades when graduating from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).
Based on the human and technical means that existed on what was previously known as the Laboratory, in August 1994, LABELEC - Estudos, Desenvolvimento e Actividades Laboratoriais, S.A, was founded mostly because of Eletricidade de Portugal (EDP) restructuration.
International interconnection: strategy change
By 2013, with new objectives set, this was a phase of expansion. Supported by an efficient organizational model, EDP Labelec seeks a commercial approach with special attention to Client’s needs and the creation of innovative networking partnerships. Given its potentialities, EDP Labelec begun to be acknowledged as the Center of Technical Excellence for all the supply chain of electric power.
From outside of the EDP Group, came forth numerous projects and partnerships which meant a great increase on work volume considering previous operations from inside the companies of the EDP Group. In any case the vision remained unchanged: providing highly specialized services within its areas of activity whilst aiming for technological development. Corporate strategy of each department and each worker is a commitment assumed by everyone, having in mind that EDP Labelecs’ success relied on giving an adequate response to clients’ needs, through strict compliance with timelines while maintaining high quality standards. SunLab, InovGrid, Red:dy, WindFloat. These are some of the innovative projects regarding energy efficiency and entrepreneurship. These projects strengthen the importance of the specialized support that EDP Labelec offers. In this matter we must bring to the spotlight FabLab EDP. Established in 2011 through a joint effort with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the FabLab EDP is the first Portuguese digital laboratory, located in our facilities. It is a place where creativity and innovation strive, open to anyone who wishes to transform their original idea to a market-ready product. To be able to do so, it relies on fast prototyping tools such as the 3D Printer, laser and vinyl cutting machines, among others. From FabLab EDP emerged projects such as wind turbines, smart grids, and homes that solely rely on solar power for energy consumption needs.
In the actual context and predicting what the future will be, the essential lies on cooperating in scientific research activities, “green energy” technologies development as well on mutual technical support and joint participations at international projects.
These are the main axis for EDP Labelec’s operations for a future of sustainable development and continuous improvement that can benefit both the needs of businesses and society.
